NY Fashion Week: Fall 2013

I’ve been following the shows at New York’s rather snowy fashion week where designers are showcasing their ready-to-wear Fall collections. Although it’s not over yet I thought I’d do a bumper edition of the shows that I’ve liked so far.

Tory Burch’s collection struck me for its elegant femininity, featuring Art Nouveau patterns and colours. I think the last dress (bottom right) would make a truly beautiful wedding dress.

Catherine Malandrino‘s collection of striking geometric outfits that were inspired by the French Art Deco furniture designs of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann caught my eye.

True to form, Mara Hoffman presented a collection of bright colours and bold patterns. I love that she is not afraid of daring combinations.

Suno’s collection was noteworthy for its details – whether it was an interesting silhouette, a high collar or a surprising pairing of prints.

Carolina Herrera’s collection brought a little 1940′s glamour to the runway with fur trims, tightly-waisted dresses and victory-roll coifs.

Marc by Marc Jacobs collection was flirty and fun – replete with big hair and red lips.

Diane von Furstenberg made the most of the female form with her trademark wrap tailoring. Love the leather collar and cuff detail on the first dress.

Thakoon Addition’s easy boyish collection charmed the pants off me. It’s quite something to make boxy shapes beautiful.

Jil Sander Navy’s collection was one of the most wearable. I thought the sophisticated colour palette of charcoal, dusty pink, white, and warm earthy tones was a sure winner.

Erin of Calivintage covered the more low-key fashion presentations; like Lauren Moffatt’s brilliantly bold collection (what I would do for one of those chevron dresses) and…

Samantha Pleet’s whimsical collection with soft colours and ruffled collars.

A groovy Ready-To-Wear Fall Collection for Opening Ceremony by Chloë Sevigny. Not sure about the clothes, but I like that Opening Ceremony always does something different with their lookbooks.

South African Creatives: Photography

I’m really proud of how much South African food, art and design has developed over the last ten years. It’s such a vital and vibrant community of creative people. There are so many talented designers, artists and photographers creating amazing work, which is really inspiring.

I thought I’d share some creative work that I’ve appreciated recently. I’m also thinking of making this a regular feature. First up…photography.

Masks

Masks is an ongoing material experiment by Bertjan Pot started in 2010. What began as an attempt to create a flat carpet by stitching together brightly coloured rope, turned into a much more artistic and sculptural end result.  I think these are way better than any carpet.

BKFST

With the lack of internet I’ve been experiencing lately, I’ve been pretty negligent of the breakfast tumblr that Diana and I run. But, I am happy to report that I’ve finally got internet at home so I’ll be populating it more frequently.

Here are some recent images from the BKFST tumblr to get your mouths watering and to hopefully inspire some delicious culinary adventures. Please click on the images for their original links.

Viviane Sassen

Viviane Sassen is a Dutch photographer whose work straddles the fields of fine art and fashion photography. Her acute ability to play with light, colour and pattern serves her well in creating images that are both beautiful and conceptually driven.

Vivianne was born in Amsterdam in 1972, but lived in Kenya during her childhood. Since then she has returned to Africa for a series of photo essays that explore conceptions of Africa and African identity.

A Working Space

Valentin Loellman is a product designer who graduated in 2009 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht. His studio space is particularly beautiful – a private sanctuary filled to the brim with plant life. I can imagine it’s great for the stimulation of creativity.

A working space like an empty canvas for a piece of work. The people, who craft the room and its specific energy, constitute the material. Energy which the surroundings give to its residents just as they return some to the place. “
