Daily Metaltations

I first learned about the work of Steve Powers from the 2008 documentary film Beautiful Losers, directed by Aaron Rose and Joshua Leonard. The film profiled a group of American artists in the 1990’s, who were influenced by popular and low brow culture. It’s a really great documentary – if you haven’t watched it, you should.

Steve Powers work takes inspiration from the conventions of graffiti, sign and mural painting. He became renowned for his political mural works in Dublin, Philadelphia and New York. One of his most recent ongoing projects is called Daily Metaltations, which is a visual diary (of sorts) using hand painted signage and bold, flat iconography. Each work is an eight-by-ten-inch enamel-on-aluminum panel that Powers paints daily from sketches he makes during his morning commute on the subway.
