Mod is a youth subculture that reached the height of its popularity in London in the mid 1960’s but has endured in various pockets of society until the current day. It is a particularly aesthetic culture that pays detailed attention to fashion, hairstyles, music and scooters- to name but a few.
Carlotta Cardana is an Italian portrait and documentary photography based in London who initiated a project to document couples who still prescribe to the Mod lifestyle. They are really lovely double portraits.
“I decided to focus on couples because I am fascinated by the way their identities blend together to produce something larger than the sum of its parts. I am also quite interested in the relationship between a person and his or her surrounding environment, in seeing how they complement each other. Consequently, I took elaborate planning out of the equation when making these pictures: the couples chose what to wear and where to be photographed. The world depicted in the pictures is entirely the world they have created for themselves.”
